Review:

… en Hillbilly Caliente is the second album from Atomic 7, a three-piece instrumental rock and roll band hailing from Toronto. The trio is led by guitarist Brian Connelly, formerly of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet who also spent time playing with Neko Case & Her Boyfriends. The album's 17 tracks (which often feature ironic titles, like "What I Liked About Lord Of The Rings") are vivid and diverse with hints of Tex-Mex, 70's rock and country influences shining throughout the delightful album.

The album's tracks are a bit on the short side (most are around two minutes), but in a short period of time the band delivers toe-tapping, hook-laden songs that are incredibly fun to listen to and feature melodies that will remain in your head long after the song has ended. The opening track "Bury My Foot At Wounded Mouth," includes a steady back beat, occasional crashing cymbals and crisp guitar lines that are tinged with a country and western twang and from the get-go showcase a band that is incredibly tight and comfortable as musicians. "The Wreck Of The Dick Family Wiener Boat" is another solid effort and is among the album's most straightforward 70's rock influenced tracks, and includes Connelly's crunchy guitar riffs dueling for attention over bassist Clinton Ryder's slightly rumbling baseline.

Atomic 7 is a band that can successfully pull off blending musically styles and create an entirely instrumental record that flows together extremely well. … en Hillbilly Caliente is an album jam packed with memorable tracks that are deserving of repeated listens.

Note from the Shadowy Webmaster: Tracks 1, 5, 6, and 16 are "Bury My Foot At Wounded Mouth", "Daddy's Little World", "Devil's Mittens" and "The Wreck Of The Dick Family Weiner Boat".
