ATOMIC 7 Gowns By Edith Head (Mint)

Fans of seminal Toronto instro-combo Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet will be happy to know that guitarist Brian Connelly has not ignored his instrument since that band's demise. Rather, he creates some of the finest twang bar guitar soundtracks around with his new outfit Atomic 7. They've been tearing up the club scene over the last year and have finally released their first disc, … Gowns By Edith Head (named for the costume maker for all of Hollywood's big budget flicks from the '40s to the '70s). As the lead track states, this one is "Chock Full O' Notes" as the boys wind through all the classic genres associated with this type of music: lounge, surf, spaghetti western soundtracks, rockabilly and country picking in the Roy Clark tradition. To top it off, these cuts have some of the best titles of any wordless tunes, including "Save Your Fork There's Pie" and "Artistry In Nachos." But I'll leave you to decide what's going on during "You Ain't Having Fun Till You're Dialling 911."
