Review of The Crass And The Switchblade for the August, 1996 issue of Magnet.
PHONO-COMB
"The Crass And The Switchblade"
These remnants of Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - who recently recorded
a full album with Jad Fair - have buried their former band, and Phono-Comb
(which adds a few garage elements to SMOASP's instro-surf sound) is the result.
The a-side is a moody piece, something like the Plugz' desolate wanderings on
the Repo Man soundtrack. The Ramones cover on the flip, however, just
points out once again what a great surf combo "da bruddahs" could have been.
